The Front LCDs
The front panel was to be modified to support an LCD cluster, instead of a single LCD like I had originally planned. This also allowed the vertically mounted slot-loading DVD drive underneath. As the mesh and part of the front panel was removed, and a new support structure was made with a flat aluminium bar, I fabbed up a three-way frame to hold the three 2.5” LCD screens, based off of measurements taken from the panel. Yes, they are
actual colour LCD screens that run real video from a simple composite cable.
I made three pockets to hold the screens and secured them to the frame with bolts and nylon locking nuts. To make the LCD cluster more like the actual one from the show, I needed to add a couple more underneath, however because they were smaller they didn’t have to be real, so instead I designed and made dummy screens. These were just pieces of frosted acrylic with LEDs behind them for illumination, and a special graphic printed onto transparent adhesive film stuck to the front to simulate a live image.
Finally the screen surrounds were primed then painted black, because having a small black metal grille cut and folded around the outside to give a more industrial look rather than a plastic one, albeit on a tiny scale.
